After a background in 8-bit reverse engineering in the early 90's, the idea of automated reverse engineering software came to Jeremy Smith in 1998. The early decompiler was called DisInforMation. In 2002, an attempt was made at a Visual Basic 5/6 decompiler, and this ended up being both VB5 and VB6, but also the processor they are based on: The x86. This decompiler was called RightBack, and now is being open sourced as the RevEngE software.
